Keeping In Touch

Maintaining long-distance relationships with the elderly can be tough. Not only do they not get out like they once did but we all lead very busy lives making it more difficult to travel to where they live.

In these hectic times, sharing lives and activities is made a little easier through technology. With a smartphone, tablet or computer, hearing and seeing family members is a breeze.  Now, though you may be miles apart, seeing the latest Halloween costume, a new dance move or the loose tooth is possible the use of Skype, Google Hangout and FaceTime and Facebook.

LifeFone offers a little tutorial about these services so you can determine which is most helpful to you and your family.

Skype:

Skype allows two parties to hear and see each other in real time. It is free and works on a tablet, smartphone or computer. Simply download the free app and open an account. Add people by their Skype name and ask people to add you to their account. Then simply click on their name and click Video Call.  You will hear and see the person you are connecting to.  You may experience a little lag time but that is normal.

Google Hangout:

Hangout allows multiple parties to hear and see each other in real time. You can also text and like Skype, it is free and works on a tablet, smartphone or computer. If you are using this on your mobile device, download the free app. On a computer, access it through your computer’s browser. Sign up for an account and get started!

FaceTime:

FaceTime is an app for Apple users. It is already included on all Apple devices. It allows two parties to hear and see each other in real time. Again, it’s free and you simply use a person’s cell phone or email address to reach them, depending on how their account is set up.

Facebook:

Facebook allows people to post comments, photos, send private messages and videos. While you can’t see each other in real time, it is a great way to share photos and life-moments. It is free and works on a tablet, smartphone or computer.

If there is a distance between you and your loved ones try using these services to stay connected.  You’ll be glad you did!
